Costume Questions & Answers

Hello everyone,

The costumes are now all booked. We are using Crescendo in Reading for the ladies and the pirates, and Homburg's in Leeds for the Policemen's and other uniforms.

This email tries to answer some of the questions which have been sent recently to B99, or separately to me.

If anyone has any concerns or other questions, please do not hesitate to drop me an email and I will try and help.

Daughters

 1.        Black character shoes for Act 1 costumes, plus flesh colour stockings or tights. Please bring short loves (white or coloured, possibly lacy); we may need to swap these around to suit the costumes as we won't be able to confirm dress colours until the show.

 2.        Remember, you are upper middle-class, so good foundation garments are essential to help wear these Victorian dresses properly. The dresses will be supplied with "bum pads" to accentuate your figures.

 3.        Costume jewellery: necklaces, brooches. No large rings.

 4.        Costumes are NOT supplied with wigs so you may wish to bring wigs or hair extensions (ringlets).  I have already sent pictures to people who are thinking about buying their own.  If you go to the Savoy Singers web site, you will get some idea of hairstyles when we used Crescendo's set of costumes earlier this year.

 5.        For the Savoynet production, these costumes will come with small Victorian flattish hats to complement the dresses.

 6.        We have purchased a set of white parasols on behalf of all the daughters (these cost GBP 12.00 each).

 7.        Pink ballet shoes (either fabric or leather, it doesn't matter) for Act 2.  Costumes come with shawls.

 8.        Long white slips or petticoats for under the nightdresses may be useful.

Servants

 1.        Black character shoes, flesh colour tights or stockings.

 2.        Shawls, mop caps, metal curlers, wave grippers, or other similar accessories for your  dishabille appearances in Act 2.

Pirates

 1.        Black traditional-style shoes (not thick soled) plus slip-on silver/metal buckles with black elastic if you have them.

 2.        Pirate jewellery: brooches, pendants, etc

 3.        The costumes come with BLACK tights, but it would be better if we had COLOURED STRIPEY ones. I will get these from the costumiers for the Pirates at a cost of GBP 6.50 a pair.  Please send me an email if you already have you own.

 4.        I am buying a set a identical spotted handkerchiefs for the Pirates (and Ruth); these will cost GBP 1.35 each.

Policemen

1.        Black lace-up shoes, ideally with toe-caps.

2.        White gloves (if you haven't got any or you forget, you can buy them from Potters in Buxton when you arrive).  Having seen what David intends you to be doing with the truncheons, it would also be a good idea to bring a spare old pair of gloves with you for rehearsals.

Everyone

Small national flags for the Act 2 finale (SavoyNet tradition).
